Notodden Blues Festival takes place every year in August and is one of the most popular music festivals in Norway (www.bluesfest.no).

West of Notodden, along Road 11, lies Heddal ! [map] with its famous stave church (Stavkirke; tel: 35 01 39 90; www.heddalstavkirke.no; May–June 10am–5pm; June–Aug 9am–7pm; Aug–Sept 10am–5pm; charge), the largest and most impressive in Norway. Built between 1147 and 1242, it has a richly carved doorway with animals and human faces. The Telemarkers are masters at expressing nature through art, and nowhere is this more evident than in the rose paintings in the Ramberg room of Heddal Museum (Heddal Bygdetun; tel: 35 02 08 40; farmhouses: mid-June to mid-Aug 10am–6pm; charge).

Further on, Road 37 branches off to the north past Lake Tinnsjø towards Rjukan @ [map]. For a breathtaking alternative route, stay on the E134 to Sauland and turn north, through Tuddal, to drive past Gausta Toppen, one of Norway’s landmark peaks. The stretch from Rjukan west to Rauland is also lovely and can be covered by public bus. Keep an eye open for highly decorative wooden houses and double-storey barns, with a ramp leading to the upper floor.
